Is Traveling Alone Lonely? Unveiling the Truth and Benefits of Solo Adventures
Introduction: Is it Lonely to Travel Alone?
Going on solo adventures can be both exhilarating and daunting, so you might ask yourself “Is traveling alone lonely?” In this article, I’ll share my experiences.
Contrary to popular belief, traveling solo doesn’t automatically mean you will feel lonely. I’ve learned that the whole “lonely” thing usually comes down to the connections (or lack thereof) you make with the folks around you.
Of course, it also depends on your character. Extroverts may look for different travel experiences than introverts, but we’ll get into that later.
Solo travel pushes you out of your comfort zone and builds resilience, as you come across challenges and make spontaneous decisions. Moreover, it allows you to create your own itinerary, prioritize your interests, and fully indulge in the experiences that ignite your passion.
In this article, I’ll unveil the truth about solo travel, debunk common misconceptions, and highlight the numerous benefits it brings. So, if you’re considering going on a solo adventure, rest assured that you’re in for an incredible journey of self-exploration and discovery.
Debunking the myth: Traveling Alone is Lonely
When people think of traveling alone, one of the first concerns that comes to mind for most people is loneliness.
In my experience the reality is quite different. Solo travel offers an opportunity to connect with the world around you in ways that are not always possible when traveling with others.
When you’re traveling on your own, you’re more approachable and open to meeting new people. These spontaneous interactions often lead to the best experiences.
I’ve been invited into peoples homes to see their new-born baby, to witness a baptism, to join them on activities or for a bite to eat, all because I’m so much more open to new experiences when I travel alone.
One of the main benefits of solo travel is the freedom to do what you want, when you want. That also means doing activities where you’re likely to meet like-minded people.
Of course you love your friends back home, but they might not share your passion for surfing, hiking, bird watching, kayaking or whatever it is that gets your blood pumping. When you travel and meet other people that share your interests, you’ll have an instant connection, and someone to chat to about the things you are passionate about.
You can explore at your own pace, linger in the places you love, or change your plans on a whim. This level of flexibility allows you to embrace the present and strike up conversations with people you meet.
Solo travel also provides a chance for introspection and self-reflection. Without the distractions of company, you have the space and time to truly listen to your inner voice and gain clarity on what you want and don’t want from life. It’s a chance to discover your passions, strengths, and weaknesses, and to work on personal growth.
In summary, solo travel is not a lonely experience, but an experience that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the present moment, connect with people from different cultures or other travelers, and discover new aspects of yourself.
Tips for Enjoying Solo Travel
While solo travel can be an immensely rewarding experience, it’s important to make the necessary preparations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.
Here are some tips to make the most out of your solo adventures:
Know yourself and book the trip that fits your character:
If you know you are an introvert that gets overstimulated easily and needs time to charge their social battery, don’t book a bed in a dorm room, you will most likely be miserable.
Rather book a private room in the hostel, and socialize in the common rooms when that social battery is charged. Or just book a room at that cute hotel and go on activities with other people when the spirit moves you.
And if you are an extrovert that thrives on human interaction, don’t book yourself a solo road trip through the Kalahari Desert. Unless you want to learn how to be happy in your own company of course. Which could also be a beautiful thing to learn.
Research and Plan Ahead:
Before embarking on your solo adventure, take the time to research your destination. Familiarize yourself with the local customs, traditions, and laws.
Traveling in a country that has customs or traditions that don’t align with your moral values, can make you feel very disconnected and lonely. Although it can also be an opportunity to see things from another perspective, if the gap between the countries beliefs and yours is too big, it’s probably not going to be an enjoyable experience. This is the reason I will not visit countries where women have no basic human rights.
Stay Connected:
While solo travel can be about embracing solitude for some people, others might want to stay connected with their loved ones back home. Inform them of your travel plans and keep them updated on your whereabouts. Share your experiences through social media or maintain a travel blog to keep your friends and family in the loop.
Stay Vigilant and Aware:
While solo travel is generally safe and meeting new people can be amazing, it’s important to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. Trust your instincts and avoid risky situations.
Connect with Locals:
One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the local culture and enhance your travel experience is by connecting with locals. Strike up conversations, ask for recommendations, and be open to new experiences. Locals can offer valuable insights, share their local customs, and make your journey more meaningful.
Join Group Activities:
If you’re looking to meet fellow travelers or make new friends, consider joining group activities or tours. This can be a great way to connect with like-minded individuals and share memorable experiences. Look for local meetups though the MeetUp app, join walking tours, or go on adventure activities that you enjoy, where you would meet new people.
Remember, solo travel is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and discover the world on your terms. By following these tips, you can ensure a safe, fulfilling, and enriching solo adventure.
How to Meet People and Make Friends While Traveling Alone
One of the concerns many people have about solo travel is the fear of feeling lonely or isolated. However, there are numerous ways to meet people and make friends while traveling alone.
Here are some tips if you want to make meaningful connections on your solo adventures:
- Stay in Social Accommodations: Choose accommodations that promote social interaction, such as hostels, guesthouses, or homestays. These types of accommodations often have common areas or organized activities where you can meet fellow travelers.
- Join Group Tours or Activities: Participating in group tours or activities is a fantastic way to meet like-minded individuals. Whether it’s a guided city tour, a cooking class, or a hiking excursion, these group activities provide an opportunity to connect with people who share similar interests. Want to meet other people and do something useful? Think about joining or setting up a beach clean day. I joined one in Thailand and it was great to meet new people and do something useful.
- Use Social Networking Apps: There are several social networking apps, like Meetup, specifically designed for travelers. These apps allow you to connect with other solo travelers or locals in your destination. You can arrange meetups, join group activities, or simply chat with fellow travelers to exchange tips and recommendations.
- Attend Local Events or Festivals: Research local events or festivals happening during your visit and make an effort to attend them. These events often provide a glimpse into the local culture and offer opportunities to interact with locals and fellow travelers.
- Strike up Conversations: Be open and friendly, and don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with people you meet along the way. Whether it’s a fellow traveler at a café or a friendly local at a market, small talk can often lead to meaningful connections.
Remember, making friends while traveling alone is about being open, approachable, and willing to step out of your comfort zone. By embracing new experiences and actively seeking connections, you can create lasting friendships that can make your already amazing solo travel experience so much better.
Great Destinations to Meet Other Solo Travelers
While solo travel and meeting new people is possible in any destination, there are certain places that are better suited for extroverted solo adventurers than others.
- Thailand: Known for its friendly locals, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, Thailand is a popular destination for solo travelers and backpackers. From bustling cities like Bangkok to tranquil islands, there are endless opportunities for exploration and adventur
- Australia: With its diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and welcoming locals, Australia offers a wealth of experiences for solo travelers. Whether it’s exploring the Great Barrier Reef, hiking in the Outback, or immersing yourself in the cosmopolitan vibe of Sydney, there’s something for everyone. A lot of people take their gap year in Australia, working on farms or backpacking, making it an excellent place to meet other travelers.
- New Zealand: Known for its stunning scenery, outdoor adventures, and friendly locals, New Zealand is a paradise for solo travelers. Whether you’re hiking in the Milford Sound, exploring the vibrant city of Auckland, or discovering the Maori culture, New Zealand offers endless opportunities for exploration.
- Japan: With its rich history, fascinating culture, and efficient public transportation system, Japan is a great destination for solo travelers. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Thinking about visiting the land of the rising sun? In my experience (as someone who is from the Netherlands herself), meeting locals in Europe can be a bit more challenging than in countries in South East Asia. People in Europe generally tend to stick to themselves a bit more and are less open to meeting strangers.
These are just a few examples of destinations that are popular among solo travelers. Ultimately, the best destination for you will depend on your interests, preferences, and the type of experience you’re seeking. Remember to research your chosen destination thoroughly and embrace the possibilities that solo travel offers.
Solo Traveling as an Introvert
As an introvert myself, I feel solo travel might be a lot easier for us introverts than it is for extroverts. I thrive in quiet landscapes, devoid of other people, that is the way I charge my battery.
I still enjoy other people’s company from time to time, but I don’t need other people to be content, I’m perfectly happy with my own company.
The only time I’ll feel lonely, or isolated is when I go to places where I am surrounded by people that have different values than me, so I tend to avoid places like that. You won’t find me in Pattaya walking street for example.
Benefits of Traveling Alone
Traveling alone offers a multitude of benefits that can enhance your personal growth and enrich your life in ways you never thought possible. Here are some of the key advantages of embarking on solo adventures:
- Flexibility and Freedom: Traveling alone allows you to be the master of your own itinerary. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want, without having to compromise with others.
- Cultural Immersion: When you’re on your own, you’re more likely to interact with locals and immerse yourself in the local culture. This deeper level of engagement allows you to gain a better understanding of the destination, its people, and its traditions. You can try new foods, participate in local activities, and forge meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds.
- Self-discovery, Independence and confidence: When you travel alone, you have the opportunity to discover who you truly are. You become more self-reliant and learn to trust your instincts. This newfound independence can have a huge impact on your self-esteem.
Also, successfully navigating a foreign country on your own can do wonders for your confidence. As you overcome obstacles, you realize that you’re capable of more than you ever imagined. This newfound confidence extends beyond your travel experiences and can positively impact other areas of your life.

Safety Considerations for Solo Female Travelers
While solo travel can be an incredible experience, it’s important to prioritize your safety and take certain precautions. Here are some safety considerations to keep in mind when traveling alone:
- Research Safety Information: Before visiting a destination, research the safety situation in that area. Stay updated on travel advisories and any potential risks. Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and the location of hospitals or police stations.
- Stay in Well-Lit Areas: When walking alone, especially at night, stick to well-lit and busy areas. Avoid isolated or poorly lit streets. Stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, seek a safe place or ask for assistance.
Share Your Itinerary: Share your travel plans with friends or family members back home. Provide them with copies of your itinerary, including details of your accommodation, transportation, and contact information. If they are the worrying kind, check in with them to let them know you’re safe or let them know beforehand that you won’t be in touch during your trip.
- Use Reliable Transportation: research beforehand if the public transport in the country you are traveling to is safe. Opt for registered taxi services and avoid accepting rides from random individuals at the airport; use the taxi desk if available. When using apps like Bolt or Uber, make sure you get into the right vehicle (let them confirm your name and check the license plate). Avoid hitchhiking or accepting rides from strangers.
- Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption: While it’s natural to want to indulge in local cuisine and beverages, be mindful of your alcohol consumption, especially when traveling alone. Excessive drinking can impair your judgment and make you more vulnerable to making bad decisions.
