One of the main draws of Tofo Beach is its unique marine life and diving opportunities. The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are home to a rich and diverse array of marine species, like dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and various types of sharks making it a haven for underwater enthusiasts.

The absolute highlight of Tofo Beach for most people is the opportunity to swim with whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean.

Since these animals generally spend a lot of time close to the surface of the water, trips can be done with just a snorkel and flippers, no scuba diving experience needed! These gentle giants can be spotted year-round, if you are lucky, and swimming alongside them is an experience you’ll definitely never forget. 

In addition to whale sharks, Tofo Beach is also known for its vibrant coral reefs. Dive into the depths and explore the underwater world, where you’ll encounter a kaleidoscope of colors and a variety of marine species. From colorful tropical fish to majestic manta rays, there’s something for everyone to discover.

Whether you’re an experienced scuba diver or a beginner, Tofo Beach offers diving opportunities for all levels. There are several dive centers that provide professional guidance and equipment, ensuring a safe and unforgettable diving experience.

The absolute highlight of my stay at Tofo was to see the whale sharks. I booked a small boat with two other solo female travelers that I met in my guesthouse and we set out to look for manta rays and whale sharks.

Please make sure your encounter with these majestic animals is an ethical one. So before you book a trip, confirm that the company or boat captain enforces the following:

• No baiting of whale sharks. They’ll start to rely on humans for their food, and besides this being very unnatural, it can cause them to be dependent on humans for food. The change from natural feeding could cause them to suffer greatly when tourism dries up for any reason.
• No touching of whale sharks. Just ABSOLUTELY NOT. You are there to see them from a distance and behave naturally, touching them is far from that.
• Only passive encounters: let the whale sharks decide if they want to hang around or swim away from you, and if they do swim away, don’t follow them.
• Only small groups: no crowding of whale sharks, which could cause them to feel trapped by people and/or boats.

That being said: it was absolutely AMAZING to see these animals in their natural environment. I managed to see two different whale sharks, but they were not in the mood for company, so we left them as soon as they swam off. But just seeing them briefly was worth the trip.

I was also lucky enough to encounter a very curious manta ray that did some acrobatic flying in the sea in front of me. It was so much more playful than I expected, I was truly awestruck.

One of the best ways to experience the local culture is through its cuisine. Mozambique is renowned for its seafood, and Tofo Beach is no exception.

For those seeking a luxurious stay, there are resorts that offer world-class amenities and breathtaking ocean views. These resorts provide the perfect blend of comfort and luxury, ensuring a memorable stay. 

When I was in Tofo I booked a room at Baia Sonambula Guesthouse, and it was absolutely amazing. I am not getting paid to promote them or had a free stay with them, I just loved it so much, I think they deserve a shout-out.

Think: bathroom amenities that included fresh coconut oil, an outside rain shower with lots of plants that made me feel like I was in a rainforest, and to top it all off: a private deck with a big lounge bed and private plunge pool. Their scrumptious breakfast with a view of the beach was also to die for. 

Unfortunately a pesky kidney infection threw a wrench in my Tofo adventure, which made me bedridden and on antibiotics for nearly a week, but at least I had a gorgeous view from my cozy bed.

For budget-conscious travelers, there are also affordable hostels and backpacker lodges available. These accommodations provide basic amenities and a friendly atmosphere, allowing you to meet fellow travelers and share stories of your adventures.

Take a hike  through the dunes and witness breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. Explore the tranquil lagoons on a kayak and spot a variety of bird species. The tranquility of Tofo Beach is unmatched, allowing you to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Spend your sunset at the beach and watch the local people play a friendly game of soccer. Or even better: join them.

For those interested in cultural experiences, take a trip to the nearby village of Inhambane. This historic town offers a glimpse into Mozambique’s colonial past, with its charming architecture and cobblestone streets. Explore the local markets, visit the historical sites, and interact with the friendly locals.

If you’re interested in diving and snorkeling, the best time to visit is in the dry season, from April to September. During this time, you can expect warm temperatures and clear skies, making it ideal for beach activities and water sports. This is also when the water visibility is at its best.

Between June and November humpback whales visit the area.

If you like your beaches extra empty, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of April and October.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your visit:

• Check which vaccinations you will need, and don’t forget malaria tablets. If you are going to visit a country with a risk of Yellow Fever before your trip to Mozambique, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Mozambique.
• Pack wisely: Don’t forget to pack essentials such as sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, and comfortable beachwear and long linnen pants to cover up your legs in the evening, to protect yourself frrom mosquitos. Also, consider bringing a reusable water bottle to minimize plastic waste. The Mozambican sun can be intense, so you’ll need that water bottle to make sure you are hydrated.
• Book accommodations in advance: Tofo Beach accommodation can be fully booked during peak tourist seasons, so it’s advisable to book your accommodations in advance to secure your preferred choice.
• Respect the local culture: When visiting Tofo Beach and interacting with the locals, it’s important to respect their culture and customs. Dress modestly when outside the beach areas, and always ask for permission before taking photos of people.
• Respect nature: don’t litter, don’t touch coral, don’t take anything home with you that belongs in nature and don’t feed or touch whale sharks, or other wild animals.

Tofo Beach is located approximately 460 kilometers (about 285 miles) north of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

The easiest way to reach Tofo Beach is by flying into Inhambane Airport, which is served by domestic and international airlines. From the airport, you can take a taxi or arrange for a transfer to Tofo Beach, which is about a 30-minute drive away.

If you prefer to travel by road, you can take a bus or hire a car from Maputo to Inhambane. The journey takes approximately 7-8 hours, depending on the road conditions and traffic. Once you reach Inhambane, you can easily reach Tofo Beach by taxi or local minibus.
